Mom of man shot dead by police at Winter Park wedding says whoever called 911 'mistook the situation'
The mother of a man shot and killed Saturday night at a Winter Park wedding venue says something was misunderstood.
Daniel Patrick Knight, 39, was celebrating his niece's wedding at the Winter Park Events Center on Morse Boulevard and everyone was having fun, at first.
"He just had a little bit to drink," Patricia Keeby, Knight's mother, told WESH 2. "He was excited about his niece's wedding."
However, Winter Park Police said that excitement turned to violence after they got a call about Knight.
"He was going up to several people inside the party, where he was battering people. It started inside the event center and ended up outside," Winter Park Police Lt. Lisa Suepat said.
Police said one officer tried to talk with Knight, but they say their officer was knocked to the ground, unconscious.
"His backup officer arrived on scene, approached the suspect, another physical altercation ensued," Suepat said.
Police say at that point a crowd started to gather around the two officers and that's when the second officer fired at Knight. Knight died at the hospital.
Family told WESH 2 that Knight was not being violent.
"He was happy and hugging everyone," Keeby said. "And whoever called police mistook it, mistook the situation. He was just happy."
Knight's niece, who was the bride, sent WESH 2 News a statement Sunday on behalf of Knight's family. In regard to Knight, it said: "He was a kind gentle soul, and his only crime committed that night was drinking and having a good time with his family... This shooting was unjustified and we are working with a lawyer and the FDLE to get the entire truth out."
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said in statement: "We are interviewing witnesses and officers, collecting and analyzing evidence, and establishing a timeline of events. Once we have determined the facts of the case, we will present our findings to the state attorney's office, who will make any charging decisions."
