Phoenix police were at the scene of a shooting involving an officer on Nov. 11, 2019, near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road.

A Phoenix police officer shot and wounded an armed robbery suspect Monday night, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road.

Police responded to a call of an armed robbery in the area. Phoenix police Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said the caller claimed a man with a knife attempted to steal his property while he was waiting for the bus.

The first officer who arrived on scene, a 31-year-old female officer with one year of service, saw the 27-year-old male suspect holding the knife in a parking lot near a Home Depot and a Carl's Jr. restaurant, said Sgt. Mercedes Fortune.

The man refused officers' repeated orders to drop the weapon and moved toward the officers, prompting an officer to fire her weapon at the suspect, she said.

No officers were injured, but the suspect, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital with a leg injury not thought to be life-threatening, Fortune said.

Police say the identity of the suspect is pending. The officer's name was not provided by police.
