Alabama store manager disarms pistol-wielding robbery suspect wearing elephant hat

A robbery suspect — a woman wearing an elephant hat — fled a southwest Huntsville gas station after the store manager grabbed her pistol during the holdup early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Officers were called to the Texaco at 4200 Bob Wallace Avenue after midnight to investigate a robbery report. A pistol-wielding woman wearing an elephant hat went to the counter and demanded all of the cash register money, a clerk told police.

The store manager was also behind the counter during the robbery attempt, police said.

“He moved close to the offender and grabbed the pistol out of her hands,” police wrote in a report.

The suspect ran from the store and headed west out of the parking lot. Police seized the gun as evidence.

Police on Thursday evening said they have learned the woman’s identity, though it hasn’t yet been released. Further details weren’t immediately available.

Updated at 7:42 p.m. to show police have identified the suspect.
