WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio - The man accused of shooting two Willoughby Hills police officers outside a BMW car dealership was released from a hospital Tuesday and taken to jail.
Timmothy S. Schmidt, 31, spent nearly seven weeks in a Cleveland hospital after he was shot during the Sept. 28 incident outside Classic BMW on Som Center Road by Interstate 90. He was released Tuesday and taken to the Lake County Jail, the Willoughby Hills Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.
Schmidt was indicted in secret and charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder, four counts of felonious assault and resisting arrest in the shooting, court records show.
It's unclear when Schmidt will make his first appearance in Lake County Common Pleas Court. His attorney will likely come to the court Wednesday to sign a notice of appearance, Lake County Prosecutor Charles Coulson said.
Schmidt's bond has not yet been set.
Schmidt is accused of shooting one Willoughby Hills police officer in the chest and another in the leg during the confrontation outside Classic BMW, according to a police report. The officers were treated at local hospitals and released days after the shooting.
Employees told investigators that the shooter became angry while getting his car serviced, and the officers arrived to try to calm the situation, police said.
The shooter pulled out a gun during the confrontation, and the officers drew their weapons, police said. Investigators have not said who fired the first gunshot.
Both officers are patrolmen. One is a 28-year veteran and the other has been with the department for four years, police said.
Detectives raided Schmidt's house on Bishop Road near White Road in Willoughby Hills the day after the shooting. They found a box they believed to be an explosive, and a bomb squad was called in to detonate it. Detectives later determined the box was not an explosive.
Investigators did not say what they found in the home.
The Willoughby Hills Police Department said Schmidt has an "extensive criminal history" and multiple outstanding warrants. Court records show he has a felony conviction for possessing LSD and misdemeanor convictions for drug possession, traffic offenses and disorderly conduct.
