A gunman who shot a man in the stomach to end a fight on a bus Saturday afternoon has turned himself in.

The 24-year-old gunman, Michael V. Porter, was on the lam for more than nine hours before turning himself over to authorities after midnight Sunday, said Detective Philip Toman, a spokesman for the Plantation Police Department.

The victim, who was in stable condition and is expected to survive, was taken to the hospital.

On Monday, police identified him as Bendjy Alcime, 38, of Miami.

Both men boarded the Broward County Transit bus outside a Marshalls store at Sawgrass Mills mall in Sunrise before 3 p.m. Saturday. Soon, about a dozen terrified passengers would be racing to the front of the bus at the sound of gunfire.

By the time the bus got to Plantation, heading east on Broward Boulevard and approaching Nob Hill Road, there was trouble.

A video camera on the bus captured the shooting.

The men sat in silence for nearly 15 minutes before they began arguing.

“I’ll crush you,” the taller man warned the smaller man, who police say stands about 5-foot-2-inches.

The smaller man had this chilling response: “I’ll kill you.”

The taller man sat down, then lunged at the smaller guy when he kept talking. Pinned on his back, the smaller man pulled out a gun and fired.

The shooting victim remained standing and held up his hands.

The gunman grabbed his backpack and walked out of the back of the bus, then disappeared.

On Sunday, police still were unsure what sparked the argument.

“Even after speaking to the people on the bus they weren’t really paying attention,” Toman said.

Police from Davie, Sunrise and the Broward Sheriff’s Office joined in the search for the gunman, Toman said.

In the end, they didn’t have to find him.

“He’s in custody,” Toman said. “He was arrested early this morning around 12:30 a.m. He turned himself in.”
