Man shot in robbery attempt at Mayfield Heights Dairy Queen charged

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - The man accused of attempting to rob a Mayfield Heights Dairy Queen Sunday before he was shot by an employee has been charged.

Jamiez Markel Demonte Martin Miree, 19, of Cleveland Heights, is charged with aggravated robbery, Mayfield Heights police Chief Fred Bittner said Tuesday afternoon. Miree was arrested hours after a Sunday night robbery attempt at a Dairy Queen on Mayfield Road, just east of Brainard Road.

Miree is accused of storming into the ice cream shop about 10:20 p.m. Sunday, a Mayfield Heights police report states. The robber came through the back door of the shop while an employee was taking out the trash.

The 23-year-old manager was in the back of the shop and saw the robber come in with a gun drawn, the report says. The manager, who has a concealed carry permit, fired three shots toward the robber.

The robber immediately ran from the store. Alongside Mayfield Heights police, a Willoughby Hills K-9 unit worked to track the robber and found a blood trail, some of the robber's discarded clothing and a replica pellet gun behind a nearby store, the police report states.

About 2 a.m. Monday, a Mayfield Village police officer saw a man walking on Interstate 271 northbound near Wilson Mills Road. The man matched the description of the Dairy Queen robber and was bleeding from his wrist, the report states.

The man walking on the highway was identified as Miree, who was taken to Hillcrest Hospital for treatment for a single gunshot wound to the wrist, the police report says. Miree was then taken into custody in connection with the robbery attempt.

Court records do not say when Miree is expected to appear in court.
