Surveillance video shows teen shooting, injuring JPSO deputy
HARVEY, LA (WVUE) - A 16-year-old now faces an attempted first-degree murder of a police officer and several other charges. It started when a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy pulled two teens over for driving a suspected stolen car.
The incident was captured on video surveillance, and witnesses said they were shocked by the footage.
A Jefferson Parish deputy pulled a suspected stolen car over for a traffic stop. This happened around 3 a.m. Sunday on Manhattan Boulevard in Harvey. You can see the 16-year-old shooter walk away from the car and into the frame, put his arms up and then pull out a gun and fire at the deputy, who stays behind a gas pump.
The deputy, who sustained a shot to his right hip, returned fire but did not hit the teen, who then ran off.
Neighbors and business owners in the area weren't comfortable speaking on camera, but said the early morning shots woke them up. They said the situation frightened them further when police cruisers starting casing their neighborhoods.
It didn't take long for deputies to arrest the accused shooter, who was found about 300 feet from the scene of the shooting.
The second suspect, a 17-year-old, was not involved with the shooting but was also arrested at the gas station. The sheriff's office charged Derek Lightell with possession of a stolen vehicle, stolen license plate, marijuana and other charges.
The Sheriff's Office is not releasing the injured officer's name, saying they will likely release it later this week. The sergeant is in the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.
The 16-year-old is in the juvenile detention center in Harvey. He has no prior criminal history. There is no word on if he will be charged as an adult.
Bond was set for the 17-year-old at more than $20,000.
