SAN DIEGO – A third person died Wednesday from wounds suffered last weekend during a City Heights-area domestic dispute that ended in an officer-involved shooting.

Julian Gonzalez, 45, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning, according to police.

Gonzalez’s 42-year-old wife, Reyna, also was fatally wounded when 22-year-old Juan Carlos Fernandez of San Diego opened fire Sunday evening during a dispute involving the gunman’s ex-wife in a courtyard at an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Marlborough Avenue, according to police.

Authorities declined to disclose the relationship of the slain couple and the surviving male victim to Fernandez’s former wife, but family members identified them to news crews as her parents and grandfather.

Officers sent to investigate the disturbance about 9:15 p.m. arrived to find Fernandez holding his wounded former spouse in a headlock in the middle of the street and dragging her toward the passenger side of his car, Capt. Brian Ahearn said.

The patrol personnel repeatedly ordered Fernandez to let go of the woman and lie down on the ground, but he refused, threatening to shoot her and them, Ahearn said.

Fearing for his own life and that of the 21-year-old woman, Officer Ross Bainbridge shot and killed Fernandez, the captain said.

The young woman, another man wounded by gunfire prior to the arrival of police and the Gonzalezes were taken to trauma centers, where the latter two succumbed to their wounds. The other victims, whose names were not released, were expected to recover from their injuries.
