WATCH: Man assaults Northern Virginia police officer while resisting arrest

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (ABC7) — A man assaulted a police officer in Northern Virginia while resisting arrest, a video released Saturday by police shows.

In the security video, the suspect, 23-year-old Dadrian Jegede, of Southeast D.C., can be seen struggling with the Fairfax County police officer after police said he told him to stop and tried to detain him.

He was eventually successfully arrested with the assistance of a second officer, who was called to the scene by the officer struggling with the suspect.

“Law enforcement is a rewarding profession but it can be very dangerous at times,” Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said in a statement. “Officers often put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community. When we encounter someone who resists a lawful arrest and attacks us, we are concerned for the sanctity of all human life.

“As a matter of transparency we provide this video to demonstrate the dangers of our profession. My officers were professional at all times to overcome a violent criminal and I stand behind their actions.”

According to police, the officer tried to stop Jegede and told him to put his hands behind his back while patrolling the 8200 block of Russell Road in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County just before 3 p.m. Friday because he smelled “distinctly of marijuana,” which therefore “established reasonable suspicion that a crime was afoot.”

Jegede initially walked away when police said the officer told him to stop, leading to the physical resisting of an arrest. Police said the officer used “appropriate force,” given the resistance of the arrest and that no injuries were reported.

Police said the second officer arrived after the first officer called a “Signal 1” over his radio, which is a call for immediate assistance. The officer said several people were closing in on him during the struggle with Jegede.

An internal investigation on the encounter is underway as is the case with all use of force incidents, according to police.

Jegede was charged with assault on a law enforcement and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. An outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court from Prince William County was also served.

He is being held without bond and is expected to appear in court Monday.
